Chemical Industry Banner

Chemical manufacturing rarely has a single dominant hazard the way some other industries do, which is part of what makes it demanding to evaluate properly. A single facility might run exothermic reactions with real runaway potential, handle flammable and combustible liquids in bulk storage and transfer, generate combustible dust in drying, milling, or packaging operations, and manage reactive or incompatible materials in the same footprint, sometimes in the same process. The hazards don’t stay in separate lanes, and neither should the evaluation of them.

The reaction chemistry itself is often the hardest part to get right. A process can run safely at bench scale and behave very differently once it’s scaled to production, where cooling capacity, mixing efficiency, and heat removal don’t scale the same way batch size does. Add in raw material substitutions, supplier changes, or a new catalyst, and a chemistry that was well understood can quietly drift outside the margin it was originally characterized against. That’s before accounting for the more conventional hazards layered on top: solvent vapors that need ventilation and ignition control, dust from powder handling and packaging, and pressure relief systems that need to be sized for the actual credible overpressure scenario, not just a generic vapor case.

HazBasis works with chemical manufacturers on Chemical Reaction Hazard Analysis, pressure relief system design, flammable liquid fire and explosion analysis, Dust Hazard Analysis, hazardous area classification, and PSM program development, along with the laboratory testing, calorimetry, flammability, and physical property data, that these evaluations often depend on. Because so many of these hazards interact in a chemical facility, we look at the process as a whole rather than treating each hazard category as an isolated question.
