Personal & Household Products Industry Banner

Personal care and household product manufacturing spans a wide range of formulations, and the hazard profile shifts significantly depending on what’s actually being made. Aerosol products, hairsprays, deodorants, cleaning sprays, involve pressurized flammable propellants filled at high volume on automated lines, where a leak or an ignition source near the filling equipment can escalate quickly given the concentration of flammable material moving through the process. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers and sprays introduced a wave of new flammable liquid handling into facilities that hadn’t previously dealt with it, sometimes on production lines converted quickly to meet demand without a full reassessment of the ventilation and ignition control the new product required.

Powder-based products, talc, bath powders, cleaning powders, and various cosmetic-adjacent materials, bring the same combustible dust considerations found in cosmetics manufacturing, and household cleaning product formulation often involves reactive or incompatible chemical combinations that need to be evaluated for more than just their intended use, since off-spec batches, returns, and cleaning chemical residues can create mixing hazards that don’t show up in the standard formulation review.

HazBasis works with personal and household product manufacturers on flammable liquid fire and explosion analysis for solvent and alcohol-based formulations, hazardous area classification for aerosol filling and alcohol handling areas, combustible dust testing and analysis for powder-based products, and chemical compatibility review for cleaning product formulations. We look at both the intended process and the more overlooked scenarios, product changeovers, off-spec material, returns handling, that often carry more real-world risk than the primary manufacturing line itself.
