Petrochemical Industry Banner

Petrochemical facilities operate at a scale and complexity that puts nearly every hazard category HazBasis works with into play simultaneously, and usually at higher consequence than most other industries. Flammable and combustible liquids move through the process in volumes measured in tank farms rather than drums, hydrocarbon processing generates flammable gas and vapor hazards throughout, and the reactive chemistry involved in cracking, reforming, and other conversion processes carries genuine runaway and overpressure potential if the design basis isn’t grounded in real process data. This is also the industry OSHA’s Process Safety Management standard was largely written around, and PSM compliance here isn’t a peripheral concern, it’s core to how the facility has to operate.

Pressure relief system integrity carries particular weight in this sector, since a single undersized or poorly documented relief device on a reactor, a distillation column, or a piping system can be the difference between a controlled upset and a catastrophic event. Facility siting is equally critical given the scale involved, control rooms, offices, and maintenance buildings need to be positioned with a real understanding of blast, fire, and toxic exposure potential, not a rule-of-thumb setback distance. And because petrochemical processes run continuously and change frequently, whether through catalyst changes, feedstock substitutions, or capacity increases, management of change and PHA revalidation carry more weight here than almost anywhere else.

HazBasis supports petrochemical facilities with pressure relief system design analysis, facility siting, chemical reaction hazard analysis, hazardous area classification, flammable liquid fire and explosion analysis, incident investigation, and full PSM program development and gap assessment. Given the scale and consequence involved in this industry, we approach every engagement with the assumption that the technical basis needs to hold up under the most demanding review it’s likely to face, whether that’s an internal audit, an insurer, or OSHA itself.
