Food & Beverage Industry Banner

Food and beverage manufacturing is one of the industries most associated with combustible dust in practice, sugar, flour, starch, cocoa, spices, and powdered ingredients handled in the volumes a modern facility runs through are genuinely explosible, and several of the most severe industrial dust explosions on record happened in food processing facilities. What makes this industry particularly tricky is that a lot of these materials don’t look hazardous on the plant floor the way a chemical powder might, they’re food, which can make housekeeping and dust accumulation control feel less urgent than it actually is.

The hazard isn’t limited to dry ingredients, either. Alcohol production and distilling introduce flammable vapor concerns during fermentation, distillation, and packaging. Frying and cooking operations generate combustible dust from breading and coating materials while also handling hot oil and open flame in the same space. And as facilities modernize their material handling with pneumatic conveying, bucket elevators, and automated dust collection, the equipment designed to keep the plant clean can itself become the highest-risk point in the system if it isn’t properly protected.

HazBasis supports food and beverage manufacturers with Dust Hazard Analysis for ingredient handling and processing, combustible dust testing tailored to food-grade powders, hazardous area classification for alcohol and solvent operations, and ignition source analysis for dryers, mills, and conveying equipment. We understand that these facilities are also managing food safety and sanitation requirements alongside fire and explosion hazards, and we scope our recommendations to work within that reality rather than proposing housekeeping or containment measures that conflict with food-grade operating practices.
